I'm having a similar problem, X suddenly restarted. When I searched
Google for the stuff in the log it mentions some problems with old
versions of firefox, but I don't have the bad version installed. What
causes signal 15? Why the gdm fatal X error? What other logs should I
be looking at?

Relevant parts of /var/log/messages:
