As suggested on page http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle10g.shtml
you need to change the redhat-release file to fool the installer.

su - root
cp /etc/redhat-release /etc/redhat-release.backup
cat > /etc/redhat-release << EOF
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon)
EOF
