This does not work for me either... with mailx...
but with sendmail, it works.

$ cat <<EOF | /usr/sbin/sendmail -t
Subject: test
to: jd@xxxxxxxxxxx
Content-type: text/html
<p>
<table border='1' width='90%' align='center' summary='Script output'>
<tr><td align="right">15361753</td></tr>
</table>
EOF
