Just limit the upstream a little bit. Most BT clients allows that, if
not get one that does ;)

I'll leave my on, with variable upload speed depending on the time of
day, until I need the space for something else or my raito is 100.0
(ie: uploaded 100 copies). Still got plenty of space on the HDD so
hopefully it will be a while.
