formatting a 3 terabyte partition

msdos partition tables can't use >2TB partitions, you need to create a 
seperate Itanium type (forget the name) partition. Parted has this 
capability.

However you will still need to have a seperate logical volume with an 
MSDOS partition table for booting - neither GRUB nor LILO can boot from 
the new style partitions yet.
