OK ... that is the problem ... 

For some reason, your initrd images are not being generated during the
kernel RPM installs.

try downloading the latest kernel and manually:

http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/kernel-2.6.9-11.EL.i686.rpm

and install it with the command:

rpm -ivh --force kernel-2.6.9-11.EL.i686.rpm

pay particular attention to any errors on the screen in the text

When finished, see if there is an initrd-2.6.9-11.EL.img in /boot
