You probably have the kernel exempted in the method you are using to do
the update.
up2date normally exempts the kernel ... click on the
Menu -> System Settings -> CentOS Network Settings
Click on the "Package Exceptions" tab ... and remove kernel* from the
"Package Names to Skip" section and save.
Then you can run up2date and upgrade your kernel.
