Creating your own ACPI events to suspend?

I've been trying to get this laptop I just got to suspend. It's not 
working. I saw this bug report...

And I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of creating 
your own events to suspend the laptop. I've never done this before. Is it 
even worth it? Does Linux hibernate well?
