Are these steps for re-installing Gnome correct/safe?

mkdir ~/gnome-backup-$(date +%F) && mv ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus
~/.gconf/apps/metacity ~/.gnome* ~/gnome-backup-$(date +%F)
