[Bulk] Adaptec 2230SLP not detected

Replying to myself again...

I traced the problem to the Tyan motherboard: its BIOS allows one to
pick the type of OS being installed, which preps the board accordingly.
It was set to "other" by the vendor.  I changed it to "linux", and the
2230SLP was detected.

Hope that helps someone in the future...
