Most desirable: leave everything at auto and replace any equipment
that can't be made to negotiate correctly with software or flash
updates.  Otherwise you are hurting performance or setting up
a situation where the next port/equipment swap is likely to
have a mismatch.  Or you need a degree of management that is
probably more expensive than equipment that works properly.
