At this point I would like to point out that you should not be doing things like compiling kernels as root, let alone writing your own files into /usr/src. So I would recommend that once you have installed the kernel-sourcecode package, you switch back to a normal user and use: cd ~ (or /tmp whatever) cp -r /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL . cd linux-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL cp configs/kernel-2.6.9-i686.config .config make oldconfig make menuconfig etc... (Note, untested on CentOS-4. Perhaps someone could confirm). Regarding the kernel-sourcecode dependencies, many of them look optional and might be easily ignored with --nodeps.
