Thanks for pointing me to xm dmesg. That was the missing part. The server has one of the AMD CPUs affected by this: http://lists.xen.org/archives/html/xen-announce/2012-06/msg00002.html So we had to add allow_unsafe to the boot line. Now Xen works fine.
