Looking at the SRPM kvm-83-249.el5.centos.5, and the SRPM for qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.209.el6.src.rpm on CentOS 6.2, I see many patches to remove SCSI support. The 5.2 kvm.spec file disables scsi in the configure run. Why has this been disabled? Many old OS's don't grok SATA, but have had SCSI support for years.
