Just did an x86_64 install on a VirtualBox VM with 1GB RAM and a 6GB 
disk and took all defaults.  Ends up using 2.7GB of the 3.8GB / and 
creates a 2GB swap, so I'd call 5GB an absolute minimum for the default 
x86_64 install with 1GB RAM.  Could run an i386 install too, but this is 
probably good enough.
