Human Cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1)

Local, state, and federal public health officials identified 38 human cases of H5N1 bird flu in California; 37 cases were in dairy farm workers with occupational exposure to sick cows, and one case in a child with an undetermined exposure. This is the first pediatric case of H5N1 bird flu reported in the United States.

• Pedestrian and Overall Road Traffic Crash Deaths

  In 2022, the traffic-related pedestrian death rate in the U.S. was higher than the rates of 27 other high-income countries and approximately three times the median rate in these countries.

• Notes from the Field: Neurosyphilis, Ocular Syphilis, and Otic Syphilis

  During January 1–October 31, 2023, 40 cases of neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, and otic syphilis were reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health.

• Surveillance Summaries: Contributing Factors of Foodborne Illness Outbreaks
  During 2014–2022, more than 6,000 foodborne illness outbreaks were reported to the National Outbreak Reporting System. The most commonly reported contributing factor was contamination of food by an animal or environmental source before arriving at the point of final preparation.
