CDC Analysis of Sequenced HPAI A(H5N1) Virus from Louisiana

CDC sequenced the genes of the avian influenza viruses from a patient in Louisiana with bird flu who was very sick from their infection. The viruses were linked to poultry and related to viruses spreading in wild birds. They were different from the viruses causing outbreaks in dairy cows with dozens of mild human infections. Some genetic changes, likely emerging after infection, may help the virus bind more easily to cells in the human upper respiratory tract.

5-Year Study Finds Seasonal Flu Vaccination Protected Kids from Severe Flu

This study found flu vaccine effectiveness in U.S. children was consistently at least 50% against a range of severe outcomes, including emergency department visits, noncritical hospitalizations, and critical hospitalizations. Children who received a flu vaccine were half as likely to have a severe flu-related outcome than children who were not vaccinated against the flu.
