CDC Media Statement: Severe Case of H5N1 Bird Flu  On Friday, December 13, CDC confirmed a severe case of H5N1 bird flu infection in a person in Louisiana. The case marks the first instance of severe human illness linked to the virus in the United States and is the first case in the U.S. that has been linked to exposure to a backyard flock. The case does not change CDC's overall assessment of the immediate risk to the public's health from H5 bird flu, which remains low. Learn More

New Study: Influenza mRNA Vaccine Protects Ferrets from Lethal Infection with H5N1 Bird Flu Virus A CDC co-authored study has shown that an mRNA vaccine protects ferrets from lethal infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus (bird flu). Researchers used the Moderna mRNA vaccine platform to evaluate the protectiveness in ferrets of different vaccine candidates. They found that while all vaccinated ferrets produced antibodies, a two-dose regimen of mRNA vaccine provided the best protection against a lethal infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus.   Learn More
