CDC Analysis of the H5N1 Bird Flu Virus From California Child

CDC posted a technical spotlight with an analysis of the partial genomic sequence of the virus from the H5N1 bird flu infection in a child in California confirmed by CDC on November 22. An analysis of short fragments of the HA and NA genes indicated that the virus was a clade 2.3.4.4b A(H5N1) virus similar to viruses causing outbreaks in dairy cattle and poultry in the United States.

New Resource: How Bird Flu Could Spread on a Dairy Farm

CDC’s poster and fact sheet on how H5N1 bird flu could spread on a dairy farm is now available in Spanish. This resource not only shows how this virus could spread, but also provides important information on personal protective equipment (PPE). Wearing PPE is the best way for farm workers to reduce their risk of being infected with bird flu at work.
