Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

This week's CDC update highlights a new MMWR report on influenza A virus monitoring in U.S. wastewater, an H5 serosurvey of bovine practitioners, an ongoing investigation in Missouri, and updates on guidance for CDC's influenza surveillance for the 2024-2025 season.

Details on Latest CDC H5 Serostudy

CDC worked with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) on a serosurvey that assessed past exposure to influenza A(H5) viruses among attendees at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) annual conference in Ohio, enrolling 150 people. This serosurvey aims to understand the extent of H5 infections among people who work with cattle and the risk of infection associated with occupational exposures.

Update on Variant Influenza Human Infections

Minnesota reported two human infections with influenza A viruses that normally spread in pigs and not people. The patients were infected with influenza A(H3N2) variant (A(H3N2)v) viruses. Both attended the same agricultural fair, were not hospitalized, and fully recovered. So far, there have been nine variant influenza virus cases during the 2023-2024 season.
