Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC continues to respond to the outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in poultry and dairy cows in the United States. CDC last week reported on results of work to sequence the genome of the virus from the H5N1 human case in Missouri and work with the Ohio Department of Health on a serosurvey. CDC also continues to post videos aimed at informing the U.S. general public and farm workers about bird flu.

Number of Flu Deaths Reported in Children Last Season Ties Record

CDC has reported 199 pediatric flu-related deaths for the 2023-2024 season, which ties the record set during 2019-2020. Most of these children were unvaccinated. Flu vaccination coverage among children has dropped since the COVID-19 pandemic. CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for all children 6 months and older, particularly those who are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications.
