Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC continues to respond to an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in poultry and dairy cows in the United States. Recent CDC activities include ongoing A(H5N1) seroprevalence investigations among dairy farm workers in collaboration with Michigan and Colorado and antigenic characterization of viruses from recent human cases that showed those viruses remain similar to two previous candidate vaccine viruses. CDC is also supporting outreach to farm workers through Meta and by working with states that are monitoring people with exposure to cows, birds, or other domestic and wild animals infected or potentially infected with avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses.

How CDC Uses Emergency Department Data to Watch for Unusual Patterns of Flu Amid Concerns Over H5N1 Bird Flu (NSSP Spotlight)

CDC uses various data sources, including the National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP), to monitor and inform the response to emerging health threats like avian influenza A(H5N1). NSSP gathers real-time electronic health records from over 6,500 U.S. healthcare facilities, representing nearly 80% of emergency departments nationwide. These data help track flu symptoms and other health issues, offering early warning of unusual illness levels. CDC uses this information to assess flu activity, including potential increases that may be linked to H5N1, and supports local and national health responses with timely, actionable data.
