Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC continues to respond to the outbreak of HPAI A(H5N1) bird flu in poultry and dairy cows in the United States. Recent CDC activities include sequencing full genomes of the viruses from three recent human cases associated with a second poultry farm in Colorado; the announcement of two new investments to protect the health of farm workers; and continuing to support states that are conducting seroprevalence studies and monitoring people with exposure to cows and other animals infected, or potentially infected, with A(H5N1) viruses.

CDC to Offer Seasonal Flu Shots to Farm Workers

On Tuesday, CDC announced a $5 million initiative to vaccinate U.S. farm workers against seasonal flu. Preventing seasonal flu infection and severe disease outcomes is good public health practice and something that CDC focuses on each year. Reducing barriers to seasonal flu vaccine and increasing uptake in livestock, dairy, and poultry workers protects people from severe illness, which can also help reduce strain on rural health care systems in the fall and winter when more people are likely to have respiratory illnesses.

New CDC Poster Illustrates Preventive Actions at Agricultural Fairs

CDC has a new poster available for use by organizers of the many agricultural and livestock fairs taking place in communities across the country this summer and fall. The poster (pictured here) illustrates actions that can be taken to help prevent the spread of flu between animals and people amid the ongoing multistate outbreak of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cows, poultry and other animals. These and other actions are described in greater detail in updated guidance for agricultural fairs issued by CDC in July.
