Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC continues to respond to the outbreak of HPAI A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cows in the United States. Recent CDC activities include confirmation of three additional cases of H5 bird flu in poultry workers at a second poultry farm in Colorado; a genetic sequence analysis of the virus from the sixth human case of H5N1 bird flu linked to a poultry farm in Colorado; and issuing Emergency Use Instructions (EUI) for the FDA-approved flu antiviral drug, oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu®), for treatment or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of pandemic influenza A viruses and novel influenza A viruses with pandemic potential.

CDC Posts Updated H5 Bird Flu Testing and Monitoring Information

CDC’s H5 bird flu current situation page now features updated information on the number of confirmed human cases of H5 bird flu in the United States and the number of people who have been monitored and tested for H5 bird flu in the United States since the current outbreaks in dairy cows and other animals began this year. In addition to overall numbers of people monitored and tested, the data are broken down by exposure to dairy cows, birds, and other animals.

New MMWR Report Describes How H5N1 Bird Flu Cases Were Identified in Michigan

A new report in CDC’s MMWR describes how Michigan’s comprehensive One Health response to the outbreak of influenza A(H5N1) in dairy cows in the United States led to the identification of two cases in farm workers – the second and third human cases in the United States, and the first with respiratory virus infection. The report credits the successful response to collaboration between state officials, farms, and workers.
