Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated nationally, with increases in some parts of the country. Two flu-related deaths in children were reported this week, bringing the total reported this season to 93. CDC continues to recommend flu vaccination at this time.

Expanding Viral Genomic Sequencing Infrastructure in the U.S.

Knowing what flu viruses are circulating and where is critical to public health decision-making and pandemic preparedness. In cooperation with the Association for Public Health Laboratories, CDC supports a network of state labs with funding and training to rapidly and accurately sequence influenza viruses.

This Season’s Flu Vaccines Reduced Medical Visits, Hospitalizations Across All Age Groups

Early estimates show that so far this flu season, flu vaccines provided substantial protection against flu medical visits and hospitalizations across all age groups. Data from four flu surveillance networks show that for children, flu vaccines reduced the risk of flu medical visits by about two-thirds and flu-related hospitalizations by about half. For adults, flu vaccines reduced the risk of flu medical visits by half and hospitalizations by about 40%.
