Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated nationally, with increases occurring in some parts of the country. Eight flu-related deaths in children were reported this week, bringing the total this season to 65. CDC also posted an update on flu vaccination coverage that shows some concerning drops in vaccine uptake. Flu vaccinations given so far this season at pharmacies and medical offices are lower by about 7 million doses compared with last season.

Study Highlights Importance of Bird Flu Surveillance in Live Bird Markets

A six-year study on surveillance in live bird markets (LBMs) across Vietnam shows how LBM surveillance is critical for situational awareness, bird flu mitigation, and pandemic preparedness. The study found that almost 40% of samples were positive for influenza A H5 bird flu viruses, with increasing in 2022. Large numbers of birds are bought or traded in LBMs. More information is available at avian influenza.

Treatment Guidelines for Flu and COVID-19

During a COCA call this week, presenters discussed flu and COVID-19 therapeutic options, eligibility, indications, and efficacy. This is a great update for clinicians on prevention and treatment recommendations. CDC has resources for health care providers on both flu and COVID-19.
