Overview and Methodology of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women

CDC assessed findings from a survey of transgender women, conducted in seven U.S. cities in 2019 and 2020, to better understand the factors associated with HIV prevention and care use among transgender women.

• Characteristics Associated with Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Discussion and Use Among Transgender Women Without HIV Infection
  

Although 57% of surveyed transgender women without HIV had discussed PrEP with a clinician, only 32% had recently used it.

• Structural and Psychosocial Syndemic Conditions and Condomless Anal Intercourse Among Transgender Women
  

Reporting more syndemic (co-occurring) conditions was associated with an increased prevalence of sexual behavior among transgender women.

• Nonprescription Hormone Use Among Transgender Women
  

Transgender women who reported recent health care use or insurance coverage for gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) were less likely to report nonprescription GAHT, and those reporting recent exchange sex or recent homelessness were more likely to report nonprescription GAHT.

• Transgender Women Experiencing Homelessness
  

Among transgender women, 4 in 10 reported experiencing homelessness at any point during the past 12 months.

• Prevalence of Discrimination and the Association Between Employment Discrimination and Health Care Access and Use
  

Seven in 10 transgender women experienced at least one type of discrimination during the past 12 months; more than 30% experienced employment discrimination.

• Social Support and the Association Between Certain Forms of Violence and Harassment and Suicidal Ideation Among Transgender Women
  

Experiencing certain forms of violence and harassment and having low-moderate social support from any source was associated with a higher prevalence of suicidal ideation among transgender women.
