Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Seasonal influenza activity is still elevated in most parts of the country. CDC also is reporting seven flu-related deaths in children this week, two influenza type A viruses and five influenza type B viruses, bringing the 2023-2024 season total so far to 47.

CDC Tracks Drops in Flu Vaccine Coverage

With flu season ongoing, CDC continues to track flu vaccination coverage throughout the U.S. Recent estimates show drops in flu vaccine uptake among adults, children and pregnant people. Flu vaccination coverage among pregnant people, for example, as of December 2023, is about 3 percentage points lower than in December 2022 (36% compared to 39) and 17% lower than in December 2020 (36% compared with 53%).

CDC Updates Flu, RSV, and COVID Coinfection Data

It is possible to get sick with more than one respiratory virus at the same time. CDC has updated information on coinfections for Flu, RSV, and COVID-19 using data from the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET). Preliminary data on coinfections for October and November 2023 shows that around 5% of patients hospitalized with lab-confirmed flu had COVID-19 coinfections, while 2% had RSV coinfections.
