Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated in most parts of the country. While some key indicators used to track flu suggest decreases, this may be associated with the holiday season. It’s too soon to say activity has peaked. CDC also is reporting 13 flu-related deaths in children this week, bringing the 2023-2024 season total so far to 40.

Study Examines Impact of Flu Severity by Virus Type

The most common flu viruses so far this season have been type A(H1N1) and type B viruses, two viruses that have been associated with a higher likelihood of severe outcomes than those hospitalized with type A(H3N2) virus infections. This underscores the importance of annual flu vaccination and early antiviral treatment for patients at higher risk of developing serious complications.

Bird Flu Found in Mammals in the North and South Poles

In December 2023, H5N1(bird flu) was detected in an Arctic polar bear for the first time. Most recently, elephant and fur seals in the Antarctic have also been found to be infected with H5N1 virus, marking the first time these viruses have been reported in mammals in both poles. These infections in mammals do not change the public health risk to people, which remains low. CDC has resources on prevention.

#HCPs: While people of all ages are hospitalized with flu yearly, older adults are more likely to be hospitalized with flu. Strongly recommend #FluVax to your patients to reduce their flu risk.
