Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Seasonal influenza activity remains elevated and continues to increase in most parts of the country. CDC also is reporting 6 flu-related deaths in children this week occurring during the 2023-24 influenza season, bringing the total number so far this season to 20 pediatric deaths.

Updated 2022-2023 Estimates of Flu Burden Prevented by Vaccination

CDC updated its estimates of the numbers of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths prevented as a result of vaccination during the 2022-2023 flu season. Flu vaccination prevented 6 million flu-related illnesses, 2.9 million medical visits, 65,000 hospitalizations, and 3,700 deaths, according to recently updated estimates. Estimates for the 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 flu seasons were also updated.

Flu Antiviral Treatment Guide for the New Year

As we enter the New Year, we should be prepared to detect common signs and symptoms of flu. If sick with flu, flu antiviral drugs are a treatment option. Antiviral drugs are recommended as soon as possible for people at higher risk of flu complications who have flu symptoms.
