Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Flu activity continues to increase in most parts of the country. CDC also is reporting four flu-related deaths in children this week for a total of 12 so far this season. Now is still a good time to get vaccinated against flu.

Updates to Clinical Testing Guidance Algorithms

CDC has updated several testing guidance pages for patients with acute respiratory illness (1) not being hospitalized, (2) being hospitalized, and (3) hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients when SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and influenza viruses are co-circulating. Clinicians can use these updated resources to inform clinical decision making.

New CDC Study Finds Strong Vaccine Effectiveness Against Severe Flu Outcomes

A new CDC-coauthored study found that flu vaccination last season substantially reduced the risk of serious flu outcomes among adults. Flu vaccines reduced the risk of hospitalization by 37% overall, and adults who were vaccinated were 69% less likely to be admitted to the ICU. The study findings underscore the importance of flu vaccination during this fall and winter respiratory virus season.
