Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

Flu activity continues to increase in most of the country, most notably in the South Central, Southeast, Mountain, and West Coast regions. CDC also is reporting five flu-related deaths in children this week for a total of eight so far this season.

2023 National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW)

This year NIVW is December 4-8, 2023. NIVW is a yearly observance to encourage flu vaccination among people who have not yet been vaccinated. An NIVW toolkit has resources that can be used to promote vaccination. Join us in encouraging people to protect themselves and their loved ones from flu this season by getting a flu vaccine.

Flu Activity Increases While Vaccination Lags

Unfortunately, so far this flu season, flu vaccination coverage is lower among children and adults this year compared to the same time last year. Racial and ethnic disparities have persisted among adults with coverage among White adults being about 11 percentage points higher than among Black adults. Now is still a good time to get vaccinated against flu.

During a typical flu season, people 65 and older are greatly affected by severe #flu disease. This makes annual flu vaccination with a preferred flu shot especially important for people in this age group. Flu & People 65 Years and Older | CDC
