Flu Vaccine Provided Substantial Protection This Season
Interim flu vaccine effectiveness (VE) estimates show that this season’s flu vaccines offered substantial benefit against flu illness, flu visits to the emergency department or urgent care, and flu hospitalization. Benefit from vaccination was observed across all age groups. These estimates came from three different VE networks.
Why CDC Estimates Flu Vaccine Effectiveness CDC studies how well flu vaccines are working each year. Vaccine effectiveness estimates help inform vaccine policy and also can be used to help CDC estimate the burden of flu and the burden prevented by vaccination. VE estimates also inform the annual selection of the vaccine viruses used for production of the next season’s flu vaccines.
