Ask the Expert: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Viruses

A recent outbreak of H5N1 bird flu among mink in Spain might have you wondering about the risk to human health. We asked a CDC flu expert to answer this and other common questions about H5N1 bird flu.
A graphic titled “the benefits of flu vaccination 2021-2022” The graphic text reads: CDC estimates that during the 2021-2022 season, flu vaccination prevented 1.8 million flu illnesses (More than the combined number of people who live in Vermont and Rhode Island); 1.0 million flu medical visits (More than the number of people who live in Austin, Texas; 22,000 flu hospitalizations (Equivalent to preventing about 60 hospitalizations per day over the course of a year); 1,000 flu deaths (About the number of people it would take to fill two Boeing 747 airplanes). There are icons depicting each real-world comparison.

Burden of Flu Prevented by Vaccination during 2021-2022
CDC estimates that during the 2021-2022 season, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 1.8 million flu-related illnesses, 1 million medical visits, 22,000 hospitalizations, and 1,000 deaths. These numbers are lower than a typical flu season because there was less flu activity during this season. Getting a yearly flu vaccine helps protect against flu and its potentially serious complications.
