COVID-19 Related Updates

On 08/31/2022 the FDA amended the Moderna EUA to authorize the use of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent (Original and Omicron BA.4/BA.5) booster for individuals 18 years and older.  As a component of this EUA amendment, the FDA also withdrew authorization for use of any of the monovalent vaccines for 18+ years to be used for booster doses.  All boosters going forward for this age cohort should be the new bivalent boosters.  Moderna booster for younger cohorts may continue to be from the monovalent product.

Also, on 08/31/2022 the FDA amended the Pfizer EUA to authorize the use of Pfizer COVID19 Vaccine, Bivalent (Original and Omicron BA.4/BA.5) booster for individuals 12 years and older. As a component of this EUA amendment, the FDA also withdrew authorization for use of any of the monovalent vaccines for 12+ years to be used for booster doses.  All boosters going forward for this age cohort should be the new bivalent boosters.  Pfizer booster doses for younger cohorts may continue to be from the monovalent product.

This release updates the COVID-19 related codes and tables to fully reflect the current status of each COVID-19 related vaccine following the FDA EUA actions of 8/31/2022. The following updates have been made:

  • CVX Codes:  The CVX "Note" field in the primary code set CVX table has been updated for most of the COVID-19 related U.S. CVX codes to provide greater clarity and consistency regarding the FDA authorization status and, where applicable, to communicate the rescinded authorizations for monovalent booster doses noted above. No changes have been made to the codes or their descriptions.
  • COVID-19 Codes US Vaccines Crosswalk:  IIS COVID-19 Vaccine Related Code | CDC The table on the website has been updated to identify and help provide further clarity for those codes impacted by 8/31/2022 EUA amendments.
  • EUA Recipient/Caregiver Fact Sheets:  Full review of all active FDA EUA Recipient/Caregiver Fact Sheets identified two Fact Sheets with different edition dates than those in the CDC VIS Code Set. The following updates have been applied:

Updated Fact Sheet Edition Date:  "COVID-19 Pfizer BioNTech EUA Recipient-Caregiver Fact Sheet- Pediatric <5 yrs"

    • Edition Date:  06/28/2022
    • Last Updated date:  06/28/2022
    • All other information remains the same

Updated Fact Sheet Edition Date:  "COVID-19 Pfizer BioNTech EUA Recipient-Caregiver Fact Sheet- Pediatric 5yrs to <12 yrs"

    • Edition Date:  06/28/2022
    • Last Updated date:  06/28/2022
    • All other information remains the same

The above updates impact the following two VIS code files:

    • CVX Mapped to VIS
    • VIS Barcode Lookup Table

The table on CDC's COVID-19 Related Vaccine Codes website:  "COVID-19 Emergency Use Authorization Recipient and Caregiver Fact Sheets," has also been updated to reflect these changes.

Important Considerations:
The CDC is working to facilitate documentation of having provided an EUA Fact Sheet for Recipients/Caregivers in electronic medical records/immunization information systems (EMRs/IISs).  As such, the VIS code set is being used to provide the EUA Recipient/Caregiver Fact Sheet codes for EHRs/EMRs for use in a manner analogous to the electronic system and workflow documentation of VIS.  As with VIS documents, the COVID-19 Vaccine Recipient/Caregiver Fact Sheets will incorporate the CDC's scannable 2D barcode in the Fact Sheet document.  The numeric string for a CDC 2D barcode is included for each EUA Fact Sheet record in the data code set for this release.
