CDC Confirms Several Reports of Human Infection with Flu Viruses from Pigs
CDC has confirmed 3 human infections during 2022 with flu viruses that usually spread in pigs. These people all attended the same agricultural fair, where pigs tested positive for flu. Sporadic reports of people being infected with flu viruses that usually spread in pigs happen each year, many at agricultural fairs. CDC recommends people take precautions in settings where pigs may be present.
Catherine Smith is a research microbiologist at CDC, where she works to interpret and report influenza genetic sequencing data. When talking with people who are hesitant about getting a flu vaccine, Catherine likes to ask, “what is holding you back”? She thinks getting to the root of that person’s hesitancy is important and having that conversation can get people to act and get vaccinated.
