Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

CDC's most recent FluView report (December 26 – January 1), shows that influenza activity continues to increase. Influenza is co-circulating with other respiratory viruses, contributing to elevated respiratory disease activity nationwide.

Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET)

Flu hospitalizations are increasing; CDC is presenting flu hospitalization rates for the first time this season. Flu hospitalization rates during the 2021-2022 season are higher than they were at the same time last season, but lower than at the same time during the previous four regular flu seasons. These data are collected through FluSurv-NET in counties covering about 9% of the U.S. population.

Influenza Burden Estimates

CDC makes domestic burden estimates to assess the approximate number of deaths, hospitalizations, medical visits, and symptomatic illnesses caused by flu each season. The burden estimates for this flu season from October 1, 2021 through January 1, 2022 are now available. These estimates will be updated weekly. CDC estimates suggest that so far this season, at least 730 people have died from flu.

Lower #flu vaccination rates & reduced population immunity due to historically low flu activity since March 2020 could lead to widespread flu, w/more serious illnesses. Flu season has started in many parts of the country, so get your #fluvaccine today. https://bit.ly/3ES6t7s
