Keeping Children Safe

From tornadoes to water main breaks, emergencies can occur with little or no warning—even during the school day. As children head back to school, take a few steps to help protect your child from an emergency and to reunite with your child quickly and safely.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are a group of conditions that can occur in a person who was exposed to alcohol before birth. FASDs have lifelong effects, including problems with behavior and learning as well as physical problems. FASDs are preventable if a developing baby is not exposed to alcohol.

Oysters and Vibriosis

Eating raw oysters and other undercooked seafood can put you at risk for infections, such as vibriosis. Vibriosis is caused by some kinds of Vibrio bacteria.

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that causes “sickle” shaped red blood cells that can stick together, blocking blood flow and oxygen from reaching all parts of the body. People with SCD can experience pain, anemia, infection, and other serious health problems (also known as complications) that may require care by a healthcare provider.

A Day to Remember

August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day every year. It’s a day to remember and grieve those we’ve lost, and to strengthen resolve to end overdose injuries and deaths.

Newborn Screening

Shortly after a baby is born, a health professional takes a few drops of blood from the baby’s heel. The blood sample is sent to a state laboratory to be analyzed for several severe disorders. This process, known as newborn screening, is one of the nation’s most successful public health programs because the early identification of severe disorders has led to timely intervention and life-saving treatments for newborn children.

Prostate Cancer Awareness

Should you get screened for prostate cancer? The answer is different for each man. If you are thinking about being screened, learn about the possible benefits and harms of screening and talk to your doctor about your risk.

CDC COVID-19 Responder Stories
Dale Rose working in CDC's Emergency Operations Center in Atlanta for the COVID-19 response

An email lit up Dale Rose’s phone as he ran on an elliptical trainer on a Sunday at his neighborhood YMCA. It was from CDC’s COVID-19 emergency response team.

“It read something like, ‘Dale, you’re on the response now. I already cleared it with your boss. Can you be here today?’” Dale says. “Two hours later, I was in the Emergency Operations Center. I haven’t looked back.”
