COVID-19 Non-US Vaccine Codes July 15, 2021
NEW: The CDC has added and updated codes to support documentation of non-US COVID-19 vaccine administration history records.
During the pandemic, multiple vaccines have been developed and are being administered internationally. These international vaccine administrations may fall into one of the following categories:
- Vaccines issued Emergency Use Authorization by the World Health Organization (WHO)
- Vaccines Issued Emergency Use Authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as by the WHO
- Vaccines that are distributed and administered in other countries but do not have either WHO or FDA authorization
Release Notes: This document represents an update to the CDC IIS Vaccine Codes website to address non-US COVID vaccine administrations and provide initial guidance on their use.
Effective 7/15/2021, the CDC Website has added a new table to the “COVID-19 Related Codes” section of the IIS Vaccine Codes website. The table may be accessed from the following link: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/COVID-19-related-codes.html#codes
Note: The table updates described below include new non-US codes and updates to existing codes that have not yet been incorporated into the main code set files. All code set files will be updated with the next full code set release, expected later in July 2021.
Two tables in the website section “COVID Related Codes/COVID-19 Vaccine Codes” have been updated on the website:
- UPDATED: “Preview Posting of COVID-19 Vaccine Codes and Crosswalk” on-line and downloadable table has been updated to include references to US vaccines that are also distributed by the same manufacturers in other countries, and some of the tradenames used internationally. CVX Code 213 has been added to this table and notes in the record have been updated. On-line table and downloadable table files are available on this site.
- NEW: “Preview Posting of COVID-19 Vaccine Codes and Crosswalks to be used for Non-US vaccine administration.” This table provides CVX codes to be used to document COVID-19 vaccines administered outside of US jurisdiction. All the COVID-19 related CVX codes are associated to the Vaccine Group "COVID-19." CVX and MVX codes are identified for vaccines that have received emergency authorization from WHO, FDA or both. CVX codes have also been added without associated MVX codes for vaccines that are manufactured and administered outside the US but which have not been authorized by the WHO. The list of vaccines not authorized by the WHO may be incomplete. The list of vaccines indicated to be WHO-authorized will be updated periodically as the CDC monitors WHO-published information.
