CDC Study Finds Adolescent Hospitalizations for COVID-19 Higher than for Flu

A new study shows COVID-19-associated hospitalizations rates in adolescents were 2.5 to 3 times higher than rates of hospitalization for flu during recent seasons. COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone 12 years and older. Flu vaccination has been recommended for everyone 6 months and older since 2010. Vaccines reduce illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19 and flu.

Selecting Viruses for the Seasonal Flu Vaccine

Flu viruses are always changing, so the composition of flu vaccines is reviewed and updated yearly to protect against the viruses research suggests will be most common. Two flu A viruses and two flu B viruses are included in each season’s flu vaccines. Flu vaccines can protect against flu viruses that are like the viruses used to make vaccine, and reduce flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths.
