Another 50,000 women each year experience severe pregnancy complications that can cause serious consequences for a woman’s health. Every pregnancy-related death is tragic, especially because two in three of them are preventable.

Opioid Prescription Claims Among Women Aged 15-44 Years-United States, 2013-2017
Opioid prescription claims decreased from 2013 to 2017 among insured women of reproductive age. However, opioid prescription claims remained common and were more common among women enrolled in Medicaid than those with private insurance; additional strategies to improve awareness of the risks associated with opioid prescribing may be needed.
Transgender Women Urgently Need More HIV Prevention and Treatment Services, New CDC Data Show
A CDC report released in advance of National Transgender HIV Testing Day found that 4 in 10 transgender women surveyed in seven major U.S. cities have HIV. The report also revealed that nearly two-thirds of African American/Black transgender women and more than one-third of Hispanic/Latina transgender women surveyed have HIV.

Characteristics linked to social or economic capital are correlated with cervical cancer screening. Integrating cervical cancer screening into HIV care and educating patients on the need for annual screening and potential treatment are important strategies for increasing screening uptake.
New Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Data Available for Request
CDC is pleased to announce 2019 site-level data from PRAMS is now available through the proposal submission process. PRAMS provides data on maternal attitudes, experiences, and behaviors around the time of pregnancy. PRAMS is currently funded in 50 sites (47 states, New York City, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico) and covers about 83% of all live births in the United States.

Exposure to large-scale crises has been shown to cause both incident economic and interpersonal strain and to exacerbate poor socioeconomic conditions of already vulnerable women. During a pandemic, women may be especially vulnerable to secondary health problems driven by social and economic effects of the crisis.
