Two additional pediatric flu deaths that occurred during the 2019–20 flu season were reported in FluView this week, bringing the total number of flu deaths in children for that season to 198. This is the most pediatric flu deaths that have occurred during a regular flu season since reporting began in 2004. Only one pediatric flu death has been reported for the 2020-21 flu season to date.
Scientific Review Summarizes Data on Effectiveness of Flu Antivirals in Pregnant Women
A recent CDC co-authored scientific review summarized the data around clinical effectiveness and safety of flu antiviral treatment in pregnant women. Early antiviral treatment of flu with flu antiviral medications has been shown to reduce the risk of flu complications and duration of flu illness. The review concluded that data supports the safety and benefit of antiviral treatment of influenza with oseltamivir in pregnant women.
