CDC's Influenza Division compiles and analyzes information on influenza activity year-round in the United States. According to this week's report (Dec 6-12), influenza activity remains low in the United States overall but may increase in the coming months.

New Study Shows Flu Outbreaks Possible When Social Distancing Measures Relaxed   

A recent study co-authored by CDC details an H3N2 flu outbreak in Cambodia after COVID-19 mitigation measures were relaxed, showing that flu outbreaks may be more likely if social distancing measures are not practiced consistently. While we do not know what will happen this winter in the US, we do know that getting a flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against flu.

CDC global flu programs protect the United States against the continuing threat posed by seasonal and pandemic flu. Notable flu-related accomplishments are highlighted at the link below, including that flu vaccine prevented an estimated 60,000 flu deaths, more than 700,000 hospitalizations and nearly 51 million flu illnesses in the U.S. over the past decade.
