Release Notes: This release does not include updates for Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) codes and maps. Release notes and files for VIS code updates are distributed in separate release cycles.
General Note regarding this release: Codes with “Last Update” dates after August 21, 2020 and through November 16, 2020 reflect the changes and additions in this release. It includes the following code set updates:
1) COVID-10 Potential Pre-EUA Code Additions and Updates:
COVID-19 Vaccine Codes and Crosswalks for two vaccines have been included in this release in anticipation of potential vaccine availability under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). These codes will become effective if and only when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizes use of COVID-19 vaccine(s) under an EUA and ACIP votes to recommend the vaccines. The advance release of these codes is intended to help end user organizations prepare their systems ahead of vaccine distribution.
The CVX codes are listed as active. If EUA authorization and ACIP recommendation is not received, the codes will be inactivated. The NDC codes are currently listed by the FDA as “unauthorized” and these NDC codes will be activated upon receipt of an EUA authorization.
A separate downloadable table of just COVID-19 codes is also available on the CDC website vaccine code sets page and has been updated to reflect new NDCs for the COVID-19 vaccine and the new CPT codes.

The AMA COVID-19 CPT codes for these potential EUA vaccines are also available and included in the CPT to CVX crosswalk downloadable file. American Medical Association (AMA) COVID-19 CPT® vaccine product and administration codes are available on the AMA web site:

The codes and crosswalks for candidate COVID-19 vaccines will continue to be released in phases as the late-stage clinical trials for candidate vaccines progress.

2) COVID-19 Related Other CVX and MVX Code Additions:
- Unspecified CVX Code 213 “SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) vaccine, UNSPECIFIED” has been added to represent the COVID-19 vaccines and to enable technical implementation. This code should not be used to record any U.S. COVID-19 vaccines administered to patients. Only the specific CVX codes listed above should be utilized.
- Three new MVX codes have been added to support potential EUA vaccine manufacturers under review:
- MVX Code = ASZ has been added to represent the parent company AstraZeneca (note that AstraZeneca is also noted under the MVX code MED as the parent company for MedImmune. COVID-19 vaccines, if approved will be labeled under ASZ
- MVX Code = JSN has been added to represent Janssen, a division of Johnson & Johnson
- MVX Code = MOD has been added to represent Moderna

4) CVX Maintenance Updates – Not COVID-19 related:
42 CVX records were updated during an internal maintenance cycle to correct legacy codes or add internal indicators. As a result, these CVX codes show a date of last maintenance in the period of September – November 2020. Rather than cite each code updated, we have provided categories of the changes that might be seen.
29 CVX codes had the “nonvaccine” field corrected and set to the correct value of “True”. These records represented products such as immunoglobulins or antitoxins that are not preventative vaccinations. This will allow better filtering of records to identify true vaccines.
13 CVX codes have a vaccine status of “Never Active”. An internal indicator flag was set for these CVX codes to better enable automated filtering between valid CVX codes that might be used or referenced on a historic records, and those that should not ever be used.
