NIAM Toolkit

  

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the efforts of healthcare professionals to protect patients of all ages against vaccine-preventable diseases through on-time vaccination.

  

CDC has updated the NIAM digital communication toolkits with resources for partners, including:

New CDC Vital Signs Report on Acute Flaccid Myelitis

  

On August 4, 2020, CDC will release a Vital Signs report about acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), an uncommon but life-threatening neurological condition that mostly affects children and can lead to permanent paralysis. Providers and parents should suspect AFM in patients with sudden limb weakness, especially during August through November. We encourage you to:

  • Look for CDC’s new Vital Signs materials on Tuesday, August 4 at 1:00 PM EDT at www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/afm2020.
  • Listen to the CDC telebriefing about the AFM Vital Signs report on Tuesday, August 4 at 12:00 PM EDT. The dial-in information will be available on the CDC Newsroom website at 9:00 AM EDT that day. 
  • Join the conversation via your social media channels using the hashtags #acuteflaccidmyelitis, #knowAFM, and #VitalSigns 
  • Learn about CDC’s guidance and resources for clinicians and parents and share them as appropriate.

Webinar: Strengthening vaccine confidence in pediatric offices during the COVID-19 pandemic

  

Please save the date for a NIAM webinar for healthcare and public health professionals on August 19th from 3-4pm EDT. CAPT Sarah Schillie and Jessica MacNeil from CDC will discuss strategies for ensuring safe well visits and building vaccine confidence among parents of young children in these challenging times. Instagram Q&A answering questions from parents of young children about childhood vaccines

    

In observance of NIAM, CDC will host an Instagram Q&A for parents of young children on August 24th from 12-2pm EDT. CDC experts will provide real-time answers to questions about keeping up with childhood vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please promote this event to parents and tune in on CDC’s Instagram feed (Best viewed in Edge or Chrome).

  

 Resources for HCPs

#HowIRecommend Videos

  

CDC has added new videos to our collection of #HowIRecommend videos. These short videos explain the importance of vaccination, how to effectively address questions from parents about vaccine safety and effectiveness, and how clinicians routinely recommend same day vaccination to their patients. The new videos feature a neonatologist, a registered nurse and a certified medical assistant.

Fact Sheet for Nurses: SHARE Vaccine Recommendations for Patients with Diabetes

  

CDC collaborated with the Endocrine Nurses Society to develop this new resource for nurses who care for patients with diabetes. The fact sheet explains the SHARE approach for making vaccine recommendations and provides answers to common questions about adult vaccines.

Archived Webinar: Healthcare-Associated Legionnaires’ Disease: Current Strategies for Response and Prevention

  

In this webinar originally presented on June 15, 2020, Chris Edens, Legionella Epidemiologist in CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, provided an overview of Legionnaires’ disease in the United States. His presentation covered steps that can be taken to identify cases, collect needed specimens, and reduce the risk for Legionella exposure through water management programs. Archived Webinar: Vaccinating Adults with Chronic Conditions: Recommendations and Lessons Learned

 

In this webinar originally presented on May 28, 2020, Dr. Tara Jatlaoui from CDC and Dr. Sarah Coles from the University of Arizona College of Medicine discussed vaccine recommendations and strategies for increasing immunization rates among adults with chronic conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes. Vaccines & Pregnancy: Top 7 Things You Need to Know

  

Vaccines are an important part of a healthy pregnancy. CDC has updated this useful list, which explains how Tdap and flu vaccines given during pregnancy protect women and newborns, the dangers of flu and pertussis, vaccine safety, and more. Also available in Spanish.

CDC has updated the Spanish version of the Vaccines for Children (VFC) fact sheet for parents. This accompanies the recently updated English VFC fact sheet.

Immunization for Pregnant Women: Call to Action

  

On July 16th the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) released Immunization for Pregnant Women: A Call to Action. This joint statement affirms the importance of recommending and advocating that pregnant women receive all recommended vaccines at the appropriate time during each pregnancy.

“Getting Adolescent Vaccination Back on Track” Resources

  

The National HPV Vaccination Roundtable has created a suite of resources to help health systems get adolescent vaccination back on track this summer. These resources include short videos for health systems and parents, infographics, and a curated webpage with resources to help guide decision making and processes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
