Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

CDC’s latest FluView report (Mar 29 – Apr 4) shows the level of lab-confirmed flu continued to drop quickly and is now very low. The percent of flu-like illness decreased but remains elevated. This is likely because of COVID-19. CDC also released COVIDView, a weekly surveillance report summarizing and interpreting data on the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

People at High Risk for Severe Illness

Chronic health problems can result in more serious flu illness. The same seems to be true of COVID-19, according to a CDC report looking at about 1,500 COVID-19 hospitalizations reported during March. If you have flu-like symptoms and a high risk underlying chronic condition, contact your health care provider.

Influenza is Dangerous for Children

While flu seasons vary in severity, every year children are at high risk of severe complications. This flu season, 166 flu-related pediatric deaths were reported to CDC. This number is high compared to other seasons but remains lower than the 2017-2018 season during which 188 pediatric deaths were reported.
