Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

 According to CDC’s latest FluView report (Jan 12 - 18), national levels of flu-like illness remain high and are expected to remain elevated for weeks to come. CDC estimates that so far this season, there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses, 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths from flu.

 

Influenza Treatment: Antiviral Medication Recommendations

CDC and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recommend prompt antiviral treatment for adults and children who are hospitalized, have severe or progressive disease, or who are high-risk outpatients with suspected or confirmed flu. Start antiviral treatment as soon as possible and don’t wait for lab confirmation if flu is suspected.

COCA Call: 2019-2020 Influenza Season Update and Recommendations for Clinicians

Flu activity is elevated and is expected to remain elevated for several more weeks. During a Clinical Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, clinicians will learn about current 2019-2020 flu activity and CDC’s recommendations for health care providers, including influenza vaccination and the appropriate use of antiviral medications this season.
