Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

According to CDC’s latest FluView report (Dec 1-7), national levels of flu-like illness activity have been elevated for five weeks and continue to increase. The 2019-2020 flu season is underway with all regions of the country seeing elevated levels of flu-like illness.

 

Some Children Need Two Doses of Flu Vaccine   

​Children 6 months - 8 years of age getting vaccinated for the first time, and those who have only gotten one dose of flu vaccine previously, should get two doses of flu vaccine this season – spaced at least 4 weeks apart. Be sure to get your child their second dose if they need one. It can take about two weeks after the second dose for protection against flu to begin. 

 

Preliminary In-Season U.S. Influenza Burden Estimates

CDC has begun reporting weekly preliminary estimates of the cumulative in-season burden of flu­ in the U.S. for the 2019-2020 flu season. CDC estimates so far this season there have been at least 2.6 million flu illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 1,300 deaths from flu. In-season estimates are preliminary and updated as additional data becomes available.
