Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

According to CDC's latest FluView report (Nov 24 – 30), national levels of flu-like illness activity have been elevated for four weeks and continues to increase. The 2019-2020 flu season is underway for most of the country, however some parts of the country are still seeing lower levels of flu activity.

FluSight: Flu Forecasting

Flu forecasting aims to predict the characteristics of flu season before disease activity occurs, potentially reducing the impact of flu and offering the possibility to more effectively plan for and respond to seasonal flu epidemics and future influenza pandemics. As of December 3, forecasts suggest that flu activity is likely to increase and remain above baseline over the next few weeks.

Different Types of Influenza Viruses

The influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal flu epidemics each year. Influenza A viruses are classified into subtypes (A/H1N1 and A/H3N2), while influenza B viruses are classified into two lineages (B/Yamagata and B/Victoria). Both influenza A and B viruses can be further classified into specific clades and sub-clades (which are sometimes called groups and sub-groups).
