According to CDC's latest FluView report (Nov 10 – 16), national levels of flu-like illness have been at or above baseline for two weeks; however, the amount of flu activity across the country varies -- with the south and parts of the west seeing elevated activity, while other parts of the country are still seeing low activity.

Flu places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that flu has resulted in between 9.3 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010. Annual flu vaccination has been shown to prevent millions of illnesses, tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of flu deaths each year. 

 

Updated Interim Guidance for HCPs: Managing Patients with Suspected EVALI During Flu Season

Because patients with e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) may have similar symptoms to flu or other respiratory illness, diagnosing and managing these patients can be challenging. CDC has provided updated clinical guidelines for evaluating and managing patients with EVALI in the outpatient setting, including specific considerations during flu season.
